Lawyers are Creative. Who Knew?
Within hours of launching Swivel, we heard from all over the world about our terms of use:
It turns out we got it wrong. Our vision at Swivel is for people to share data and have fun discovering insights together. Our original terms of use did not capture that vision. Sebastian Chan in Australia suggested we use a Creative Commons style license. I had no idea what that was. Luckily Ron and Dmitry did. So, we sat down to watch a Schoolhouse Rock-style video explaining Creative Commons. Perfect.
In the video we saw that the Creative Commons approach was just right for Swivel.
Ron was able to quickly get us a meeting with Mia Garlick, General Counsel at Creative Commons. Mia usually meets with music and entertainment people (much, much cooler than us). But she was a great sport hangin' with data peeps for an afternoon. She told us more about their vision, gave us some details on how to get started and now we're in:
All the public data in Swivel will be offered under the Creative Commons Attribution license.
You let others copy, distribute, display, and perform your copyrighted work - and derivative works based upon it - but only if they give you credit.
This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License.
The folks at creative commons have a blog full of info if you would like to know more. And Dmitry recently opened up a Swivel Data group where we can all work through this legal stuff (or just talk more about data) together.
Back to exploring for those juicy insights.
