A couple of weeks ago, Professor Joe and I were invited down to Palo Alto to speak at the SF Bay Area Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery on Data Mining. Joe was right at home, being a card-carrying ACM member. For me, it was a group I never knew existed and was a great experience.
We set out to give a quick overview of Swivel and paint a general picture for the way forward vis-à-vis data mining on a public site like Swivel.
"The breadth of data sets and variety of interactions at Swivel raise new opportunities and challenges in Data Mining, social networking, data visualization and human-computer interaction. In this talk, we outline the concepts that underlie Swivel, and highlight selected technical challenges that seem ripe for investigation by the Data Mining community. As a community site for data enthusiasts, we are also interested in dialog about the role Swivel can play in accelerating innovation in the Data Mining arena more generally."
The best part of the evening, as we knew it would be, was to hear all of the ideas and feedback from participants. Our presentation is available on their site. We'd love to hear your thoughts.
