As you probably noticed by now, we're big fans of flickr. Among the many great things on flickr you'll find groups: photos and people and discussions around a particular topic, such as the one dedicated to the color blue, or another one all about orange and green... but no blue. We're dipping our toes in groups as well: now if you want to get a bunch of people together and have a discussion about, say, data related to global warming, or demographics and economy of Detroit, you can do that with groups. So, go ahead and create a new group and start adding data and graphs to it. Here are some details on how groups work, as well as guidelines for running a healthy group.
How do I put stuff into a group?
You can add content to groups of which you are a member, and you need
to be logged in. Below each graph, and at the bottom of each data set's
profile (left-hand side column), you will see the Add to Group link.
Click it and select the group to which you want to add the content. If
you are not a member of any groups, you can join a group or start a new
one. You can add any content on Swivel to a group: you don't have to be
the owner of data or graphs you want to add.
How do I remove content from a group?
You can remove content
you submitted to a group. Owners of data or graphs can remove their
data or graphs from a group. Administrators and moderators can remove
any data and graphs from their groups. When you can remove content, you
will see the "Remove" link next to data or graphs you want to remove.
In addition, when you click on the "Add to Group" link on a graph or
data set, you'll see groups the data set or graph are part of, and you
can remove them from those groups if you're authorized to do it.
How are groups administered?
The user that creates the group
is the administrator. As a group administrator, they outline the
purpose of the group, lead by example with the types of data to be
found in the group, moderate and encourage discussion and debate.
An administrator can also identify other users to help manage the group
by making them moderators.
Moderators can help tend the group by adding or removing content, and
removing members as required.
Who can view groups?
Everyone. But only members can add data and graphs to the group.
How do I leave a group?
Go to your Groups page and select the group you'd like to leave, and click "Leave this Group."
How do I delete a group?
If you are the group administrator,
you can delete the group if it has no other members. If your group has
members other than you, first you need to remove them or they need to
leave the group.
Group Administrator and Moderator Guidelines
- Encourage people to join the group — the best groups have a diverse set of users, data, graphs and discussion.
- Don’t forget to write! Or visit, or generally keep an eye on the
group. Groups prefer a daily dose of activity to keep things
interesting.
- Try to keep the group focused and on topic. Encourage and challenge
people to bring more data, insight and discussion to the table.
Encourage people involved in tangential discussions and off-topic data
to start a new group.
- Curate the group. Spend time looking through new data to identify new stuff that belongs in the group.
